Tools of Trade

For any job, the tools of the trade are of utmost significance. Though these may vary from person to person, and job to job, they definitely make life simpler.

Calendar: Both a well calendar and a desk calendar are a must for busy families. Be sure to keep a calendar near the phone as well as in the children’s room. It is also a good idea to carry a small calendar and a date book in your purse for those on the run arrangements.

Watch or clock: Many people don’t have these handy. Keep one in the kitchen, as well as one near the TV. Keeping track of time is essential for organizing yourself well. If you can set the clock for ten minutes fast and forget about it, all the better.

Answering machine: This is a boon not only for times when you are out, but also when you don’t want to be disturbed at home or in the office.

Cordless phone: It is a great time-saver, as it allows you to work in the kitchen, fold the laundry, and shell peas and more while talking on the phone.

Memo pads: Keep lots of them everywhere, even in the car and bathroom. The self-sticking ones are ideal for posting messages on the fridge or mirror for family members or to remind you to get/do things.

Kick The Guilt Trips

Whether we are genetically predisposed to guilt trips or we have just ingrained them into our lives, sadly it is hard to tell. Don’t feel guilty.

Responsible are we are, at times we do make mistakes. Let these not weigh us down. Do not put too much emotion into a situation.

Mistakes must be avoided, but oversight something lands us in trouble. The oversight too may have derailed us because we were ruing over something else. Keep the emotion under check. Rationalize the moves rather than sentimentalizing them. Take responsibility, not the blame, especially the ones that retract from pre-ordinated and must faced duties.

With the notions of extreme blame and a sense of extreme duty laid to rest, it is possible to enjoy life; it is the right thing to do, so please unload those emotions you carry for a less stressed life ahead. For all you know, you may come out the better of it!

The fear of death, the fear of losing a loved one, fear of unforeseen accidents and outcomes…the list here again goes on and on. These are real fears that touch most people. Only there is safety in the knowledge that these fears become reality somewhere in the future. They do strike and having thoughtfully prepared for them, we are subconsciously ready for them so we are able to cope.

Insecurity

Insecurity can make us manipulative. Like cornered animals, we turn vicious, plotting the downfall of others, preventing good things from happening to them, spreading tales about them, the whole department of dirty tricks. Most, perhaps all of the acts we are most ashamed of have sprung out of insecurity. Maybe, you didn’t introduce your boyfriend to your best friend because you were afraid he would like her better. Maybe, you stopped talking to your neighbor when she up-scaled her lifestyle. Maybe, you came in the way of your own children’s growth and independence because you didn’t want to lose control over them.

We each have our private list of terrible acts. Cringing? Don’t. We’re all in it together. It is very important to know that it isn’t us doing these awful things. It’s insecurity. That’s absolutely true. Never get identified with however you show up when insecurity is raging within you. It’s like being possessed by a strange spirit who makes us do thing we hate. You must have encountered people in your life who were perfectly well-adjusted until something happened to trigger their latent insecurity. Suddenly, they are different, high strung, irritable, grasping, grudging others their happiness. It’s almost as if they’ve undergone a personality change. And so they have.

Sleep Tight

Most of us have blissfully assumed that sleep can wait. But, health experts worldwide have expressed growing concern over the lack of adequate sleep, especially among working professionals and teenagers. Sleep became a major area of concern after the increasing instances of accidents, courtesy sleep-deprived drivers in the US.

Sleep apnea and insomnia top the list of sleep-related disorders. Usually a chronic condition that disrupts one’s sleep three or more nights a week, in sleep apnea one often moves out of sleep when the breathing pauses or becomes shallow. These results in poor sleep quality and are one of the leading causes of excessive daytime sleepiness. Besides, sleep apnea and obesity are inter-related: one condition increases chances of the other. Sadly, the condition often goes undiagnosed and, if untreated, it can increase the risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, obesity and diabetes.

Insomnia, on the other hand, is easier to diagnose. Simply put, it is a disorder that is characterized by the repeated inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. Sleep requirements differ from individual to individual, depending on age, lifestyle and other factors. But one clear indication of good night’s sleep is the freshness that one experiences the following morning.

Emotional Causes of Backache

Backache is widely considered a symptom of overburdened people. A muscle spasm may be the result of depression of anxiety. Suspect depression as an underlying cause if your backache is accompanied by constipation, sleeping difficulties, loss of appetite or weight, and impotence or loss of interest in sex. Other clues to depression include sadness, feelings of guilt, and thoughts of suicide or death. A stressful life-style is often marked by problems with memory, concentration, and decision-making. When emotional problems contribute to backache, psychotherapy and medication are often beneficial.

Much psychogenic backache is due to the failure of the back muscles to balance correctly because of abnormal tension. With the pain further muscular contraction occurs, intensifying the symptoms. A study of workers in heavy industry found that four out of five of the backaches was caused or largely by emotional factors.

Complications of bed rest

A number of conditions may develop, or worsen, during prolonged stays bed. Bedsores can be a nightmare. Maintaining one position in bed encourages the development of pneumonia and impairs re-expansion of a lung damaged by a respiratory disease.

The contraction of some muscles and stretching of others can cause crippling knee stiffness and also a type of paralysis called foot drop. These can take weeks to correct. There is general weakening of the muscles and joints. When bones are not used, the calcium drains from them inviting osteoporosis and fractures.

The drain of calcium can lead to kidney and bladder stones. A horizontal position can make it difficult for men particularly to urinate. Such urinary retention can then cause bed wetting.

After a few days in bed indigestion often develops, along with loss of appetite. Constipation is almost inevitable with the absence of muscular movement and the difficulties in using a bedpan. The retained mass of feces may then overflow as diarrhea.

Sleeplessness at night results from too much inactivity and napping during the day. Staying in bed can cause emotional stress marked by irritability and hypochondria, often leading to lethargy and depression.
